About Customed

Customed (customed.ai) is a medical-technology company that mass-produces patient-specific instruments (PSIs) for orthopedic surgeons. Its end-to-end platform — an operating system for personalized surgery — turns medical scans into patient-specific surgical plans, tools and implants, giving surgeons guides that are designed for one patient and used directly in the operating room.

The Challenge

Patient-specific instruments leave no room for error: each PSI must sit on a very specific area of the patient’s bone and mimic its anatomy precisely — otherwise the guide simply won’t work. And because Customed’s customers are surgeons who care a lot about speed, the performance of the geometry engine behind PSI generation was non-negotiable. Mass production meant running intensive Boolean operations on complex bone geometries — fast, accurately and predictably, case after case.

The Solution

After extensive research and comparison of the available options, Customed chose MeshLib as the geometry core of its PSI pipeline and integrated MeshLib Boolean to power instrument generation:
